Sapphire Hill Winery Uncorks New Oakland Outpost: Your Gateway to Sonoma in the Heart of The Bay
Oakland, California – August 29th, 2023 – Prepare for a taste of Sonoma County right here in The Bay! Sapphire Hill Winery is thrilled to introduce our Oakland Outpost, bringing the rich flavors of handcrafted wines, cherished in Healdsburg for years, to Temescal Alley this fall.
The new location, currently occupied by Prima Materia Winery at 482 49th Street, #B, will be the winery’s first location outside of Healdsburg. Prima Materia Winery will occupy the space exclusively on Sundays, while Sapphire Hill Winery will occupy the space exclusively Wednesday through Saturday.
Get ready to sip, savor, and celebrate as we bring the wine country magic to you with a rotating selection of our finest creations from Sonoma County. We expect to be open in late October or early November.
A Taste of Tradition: From Sonoma’s Valleys to Oakland’s Alley
Founded on a 38-acre vineyard near Sebastopol in 1989, Sapphire Hill takes its name from the blue hues of the night sky seen from the original ranch house as the sun set behind California's coastal peaks. Since 2001, the winery has thrived in Healdsburg, where we’ve been committed to producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel, each a tribute to three legendary grape-growing regions surrounding Healdsburg. We are now excited to add Oakland's vibrant energy to our story.
Meet the Gamboas: Owners and Oaklanders
Hallie and Tony Gamboa, proprietors of Sapphire Hill, have called Oakland home for over a decade. The Gamboas are excited to bring their love for Oakland and their passion for winemaking together, creating a space that reflects their inclusive values and commitment to creating memorable experiences through exceptional wine and service.
The Gamboas joined Sapphire Hill's wine club in 2015, drawn by the winery's welcoming hospitality and distinctive Sonoma County wines, and transitioned from enthusiasts to proprietors in 2022 upon the retirement of the previous owners.
Since then, they’ve embarked on a mission to preserve the winery’s traditions for their loyal club members by hosting legendary club events and creating moments delight for their guests in the tasting room. They are thrilled to now have the opportunity to bring the Sapphire Hill experience closer to home for their friends and neighbors, while forging connections with new patrons at the Oakland location.

We treat our grapes gently, while taking the necessary steps to ensure they are transformed into wines that are the finest expression of the fruit possible.
Being an independent winery has a few advantages – we're fortunate to offer the majority of our wines directly to our wine club members. This grants us the freedom from the constraints of distributor demands and their predefined release schedules. Instead, we release our wines when they've reached a level of quality that makes us proud to share them with our friends and family while making memories of our own.
